🚇 Survival Tips

Rush Hour Survival Checklist

Avoid Commute Windows

Peak times are weekday mornings (7:30 AM – 9:00 AM) and evenings (5:30 PM – 7:30 PM). Trains get extremely packed. If you have large luggage, avoid these windows entirely.

Look for Women-Only Cars

During peak rush hours, select cars are reserved exclusively for women to prevent harassment. These cars are marked with pink platform signs.

FAQs

âž• What is the difference between Tokyo Metro and Toei Subways?
Tokyo has two main subway operators: Tokyo Metro (9 lines) and Toei Subway (4 lines). The official 'Tokyo Subway Ticket' (24/48/72 hours) covers BOTH systems completely. However, regular prepaid IC cards (Suica/PASMO) charge a transfer fee when swapping between systems.
âž• Can I use the JR Pass on Tokyo Subways?
No. The Japan Rail Pass only covers JR East lines (like the Yamanote Loop Line). It is NOT accepted on Tokyo Metro or Toei Subway lines.
âž• How do subway transfers work at physical gates?
When transferring between Metro and Toei, use the orange transfer gates. You must tap out and tap back into the other operator's gates within 30 minutes to receive a discounted transfer fare.
âž• Are subways operational 24 hours a day?
No. Tokyo subways shut down overnight. The last trains typically leave around midnight to 12:30 AM, and service resumes around 5:00 AM. There are no night trains.
âž• What is the best way to choose station exits?
Subway stations have dozens of exits (e.g., A1, B3, C5). Before exiting the platform, check the yellow station directory maps. They list key landmarks, hotels, and tourist spots alongside their exact exit number. Exiting the wrong side can require a long walk above ground.
