Train Apps & Transit Backups

Essential backup routing apps for Shinkansen connections, JR Pass route filters, and train type instructions to stay on track.

Top Alternative Transit Apps

1. Japan Travel by NAVITIME

The absolute best app for tourists. It features a unique filter allowing you to check routes covered exclusively by regional tourist passes (like the JR Pass), preventing accidental fees.

2. Jorudan (Japan Transit Planner)

Excellent for granular seat-fare breakdowns, showing clear price comparisons for unreserved vs. reserved Shinkansen cars.

The Operational Rule: Cross-Reference Train Types

Always double-check the Train Type listed in your transit app:

Local (Kakueki-teisha)

Stops at every single station along the route. Safest but slowest.

Express (Kyuko) & Rapid (Kaisoku)

Skips minor stations. Boarding an Express by mistake can skip your destination completely, forcing a backtrack.

Why You Need Backups

While Google Maps is generally reliable, it occasionally fails to log tight Shinkansen connection windows or misses sudden weather delays and schedule adjustments on private regional train lines.
