Google Maps Optimization

Configure your transit settings and understand platform indicators to navigate multi-level train terminals.

The Baseline Reality

Google Maps is highly accurate and reliable in Japan. However, standard GPS routing defaults can fall short in complex, multi-level Japanese transit terminals. Proper mobile configuration is essential.

The Critical Feature: Platform Numbers

When viewing transit steps on Google Maps, always check the designated platform number (e.g., Track 4 or Platform 12).

How to use it on the platform:

Station signs and digital indicator screens in Japan prominently feature platform and track numbers. Tracking these numbers is far faster and more accurate than searching for line names or final train destinations.

Transit Layout Tip: Best Train Cars

Pay close attention to the "Train Car" recommendation provided in your transit steps (e.g., Best car: 4 or 7).

Boarding these specific cars places you directly in front of the stairs, escalators, or transfer corridors at your next destination station, saving you minutes of walking through crowded terminals.

GPS Compass Calibration

Under tall skyscraper clusters in Shinjuku or Shibuya, your phone's digital compass calibration will often drift.

The Figure-8 Fix:

Step into an open plaza and sweep your phone in a horizontal figure-8 pattern to recalibrate the GPS module geomagnetic sensor.
