📮 Address Grid System
The Japanese Address System
Understand how Japan's block-based address grids operate and how to communicate locations to local drivers.
The Core Difference: No Street Names
Unlike most Western structures, Japanese addresses do not use street names (with very rare exceptions). Instead, geographic zones are divided into nested visual grid boxes based on city wards, neighborhood districts, and blocks.
Grid Blueprint Breakdown
Here is how to read a standard Japanese address string:
Example Address String:Tokyo, Chuo-ku, Ginza, 4-5-6
- Chuo-kuThe overall city ward
- GinzaThe specific neighborhood district
- 4The sector subdivision (Chome)
- 5The specific street block number
- 6The precise building or door number
The Taxi Driver Hack
House numbers in Japanese blocks are rarely arranged in linear chronological order (they are often numbered based on construction date).
How to communicate:
Do not read the text address. Open Google Maps, drop a precise visual marker pin over the building, and show the driver the map screen.
