๐Ÿ—‘๏ธTrash Disposal Guide

Navigating Japan's public bin scarcity and strict waste separation rules.

Why Are There No Public Trash Cans?

Public trash cans were systematically removed from Japanese city streets following safety concerns in the 1990s.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Rule of Thumb: Always carry a small plastic bag in your daypack to hold your trash until you return to your hotel room. Do not litter or dump trash in random street corners.

Where to Dispose of Trash on the Go

If you need to dispose of trash immediately, search for these specific spots:

Vending Machines ๐Ÿฅค

Drink vending machines almost always have a small recycling bin right next to them with circular holes. These are exclusively for empty aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles purchased from the machine.

Convenience Stores (Konbini) ๐Ÿช

Most konbinis have public bins located right inside the entrance doors or next to the outer counters, divided cleanly by waste type. Use them for items bought at the store.
