πTrain Etiquette Guide
Social harmony rules on Japan's subway, commuter trains, and Shinkansen.
Phone & Audio Rules
Manner Mode (γγγΌγ’γΌγ): Set your phone to silent/vibrate. Under no circumstances should you make or take voice calls while inside a train cabin.
Sound Leakage (Oto-more): Ensure your headphones have zero sound leakage. High bass bleeds are considered disruptive.
Backpacks & Priority Seats
Backpack Placement: Take backpacks off and hold them in front of your chest, place them between your feet, or lift them onto the overhead racks.
Priority Seats (Yusen-seki): Avoid sitting in priority seats unless the train is empty. Yield them immediately to the elderly, pregnant, or injured.
Using the Metal Overhead Racks
Japanese trains feature metal luggage racks (amida-dana) above the passenger seats. They are highly secure, and commuters routinely place large backpacks and shopping bags there to free up floor space. Just remember to collect them before you disembark!
