💴Tipping Guide

Understanding the zero-tipping policy, service charges, and luxury inn exceptions.

Tipping is Non-Existent

Tipping is not expected, and attempting to tip in standard dining, taxi, or hotel contexts is universally declined. Staff will often run down the street after you to return cash left behind on tables.

Why?Service is considered part of the core product and is done with pride. In mid-to-high-end restaurants and Western hotels, a 10% service charge is automatically calculated into your final bill.
⭐ The Ryokan Exception

Luxury Inn Room Attendant Protocol (Kokorozuke)

At highly traditional, premium hot spring inns (Ryokans), a small gratuity (called Kokorozuke, usually ¥1,000–¥3,000) is sometimes offered to your personal room attendant.

Never hand bare cash directly. Cash must be placed inside a clean paper envelope (Pochi-bukuro).
Present the envelope using both hands with a slight bow at the start of your stay, saying: "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" (Please look after us).
