🚫Do's And Don'ts Guide

The foundational taboos and compliance rules of Japanese social spaces.

⭐ Core Taboos

The Big Three Taboos

1. No Walking While Eating (Tabeloki)

Consume street food, drinks, or convenience store snacks directly next to the stall or store where you bought them. Walking while consuming food is considered sloppy and risks spilling on passersby.

2. No Pointing

Pointing at people or objects with a finger is considered aggressive and rude. Use an open hand, palm facing up, to indicate directions or items.

3. No Loud Public Talking

Keep conversational volume low on city streets, inside elevators, and within store aisles. Silent public spaces are highly valued.

🤝 Interaction Protocol

The Two-Handed Acceptance Rule

Always accept business cards, store receipts, or payment change using both hands accompanied by a slight bow. Using a single hand conveys indifference or disrespect.

Pro-tip: When paying at registers, do not hand cash directly to the cashier. Always place the cash or card onto the small tray (turi-tara) provided on the counter.
