♨️Onsen Rules Guide
Etiquette for traditional hot springs and sento public bathhouses.
Tattoo Restrictions & Workarounds
Most public bathhouses in Japan strictly bar visible tattoos due to historical criminal affiliations. Here is how to navigate this rule:
For Small Tattoos
Purchase flesh-colored water-resistant stickers (Cover Stickers) from local drugstores to completely cover the ink.
For Large Tattoos
Book a ryokan with a private family bath (貸切風呂 - Kashikiri-buro) or look for explicitly tattoo-friendly public bathhouses.
The Bathing Ritual Walkthrough
Follow the correct bathing sequence from entering the changing room to soaking in the spring.
Remove All Clothes (Locker Room)
Remove all jewelry and clothing in the locker room. Swimsuits, underwear, or modesty wraps are strictly forbidden in the bathing area.
Tip: Put everything in your designated basket or locker and lock it.
