The Golden Rule: Roaming ON vs OFF

Keep your home SIM line Active for Voice/Texts, but turn Data Roaming OFF for the home SIM. Turn Data Roaming ON only for your local Japanese eSIM profile. Receiving standard SMS text messages is generally free when roaming globally.

1

Before Departure

Contact your home carrier (or check their app) to verify that international roaming is active on your account. Some networks disable roaming blockades by default.

2

Phone Line Settings

Keep both lines turned ON. Set Cellular Data to use your local Japanese eSIM (e.g. labeled "Japan Data"). Set Default Voice Line to your home SIM.

3

Wi-Fi Calling (Optional)

Enable Wi-Fi Calling in your home SIM settings. This allows you to receive SMS codes over airport or hotel Wi-Fi connections even in zones with no cellular coverage.

🏁 Step-by-Step

Pre-Departure Checklist

Verify Home Carrier Roaming Status

Call your home network provider or verify in their mobile app that international roaming capabilities are active on your profile.

Configure Cellular Lines

Go to Cellular settings, keep your home SIM enabled for calls/texts, and set your new Japanese eSIM profile as the source for all cellular data.

Activate Wi-Fi Calling

Go to SIM profile settings and enable Wi-Fi calling. This acts as a crucial fail-safe if local towers fail to pick up your home carrier's roaming signal.

FAQs

Will I get charged for receiving text messages?
No. On almost all global mobile networks (including major US, European, and Indian carriers), receiving standard incoming SMS texts is completely free, even when roaming internationally. Just make sure data roaming is turned OFF on that specific home SIM to avoid background data syncing fees.
Why is my home SIM showing "No Service" in Japan?
This occurs if your home carrier does not have active roaming agreements with local Japanese networks (SoftBank/Docomo/KDDI), or if international roaming was not enabled on your account before you left. Try going to your mobile network settings, disabling "Automatic" carrier selection, and manually selecting one of the available local carriers.
Do I need to keep cellular data roaming enabled on my home SIM?
No. You must keep data roaming turned OFF for your home SIM line to prevent accidental background data fees. Only keep the line itself turned ON so it can connect to the local partner tower for incoming voice calls and text messages.
Can I receive OTPs if my phone doesn't support Dual SIM?
If your phone does not support Dual SIM, you can either swap back your physical home SIM temporarily when you need to receive a code (keeping mobile data turned off), or use 2FA alternatives such as authenticator apps.
Are voice call verification codes supported?
Yes. If your bank verifies identity via an automated voice call instead of SMS, you can receive the call while roaming, but be aware that your home carrier will charge incoming international roaming call rates (typically $1 to $3 per minute).
