What is eSIM? (20-Second Breakdown)

📱

Definition

A digital SIM profile downloaded via a QR code. No physical card swapping required.

👑

The Golden Rule

Your physical home SIM stays in your phone so you keep your phone number, while your mobile data switches completely to the Japanese network.

🔍

Compatibility Check

Dial *#06# on your phone. If you see an EID number, your phone is eSIM compatible.

FAQs

Can I make traditional phone calls?
No. Data-only. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or LINE.
What if the QR code fails to scan?
Copy and paste the manual SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code provided in your purchase confirmation email.
Can I reinstall my eSIM if I delete it?
No. In almost all cases, eSIM QR codes are designed for single-use scan validation. If you delete the cellular profile, you cannot re-scan the QR code. You must purchase a new plan or contact customer support.
When should I install my eSIM?
It is highly recommended to scan and set up your eSIM profile at home before departure while connected to a strong, stable Wi-Fi connection. The validity period generally will not begin counting down until you land in Japan and link to a local network.
Do I need a passport to purchase an eSIM?
Most general data-only travel eSIMs (like Airalo or Ubigi) do not require real-name registration or passport uploads. Some voice-enabled or locally hosted plans might require identity verification in compliance with Japanese telecommunications laws.
