Overview

Nijō Castle is a magnificent, flatland castle located in central Kyoto. Constructed in 1603 as the imperial capital residence of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the castle showcases the supreme power of the military rulers. It is famous for its gorgeous Ninomaru Palace, defensive moats, and 'nightingale floors' engineered to squeak like birds when walked on, protecting the Shogun from ninja assassins.
