Overview

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of the god Inari, the Shinto deity of rice, agriculture, and business. Founded in 711 AD, it is Kyoto's most visited and iconic sight, famous for its winding mountain pathways covered by over 10,000 vibrant vermilion Torii gates (Senbon Torii) stretching up the sacred Mount Inari.

Essential Highlights

01

Senbon Torii (Thousand Gates)

Walk through the dense, twin pathways of tightly packed red gates at the start of the trail.

02

Fox Statues (Kitsune)

Look for dozens of stone foxes holding keys to granaries, acting as the deified messengers of Inari.

03

Yotsutsuji Intersection

Reach the scenic mid-way clearing offering sweeping panoramic views over southern Kyoto.
